For example: the latest Chrome browser supports AVIF images while some old versions don't. Introduction | The only difference between the JPG and JPEG formats is the number of characters used. JPG only exists because in earlier versions of Windows they required a three letter extension for the file names. So .jpeg was shortened to .jpg. While Windows and or DOS had this limitation, UNIX did not and so UNIX and MAC users continued to use the .jpeg extension. | JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. |
